Ashley.

I stared at my phone, wondering what possessed me to accept Alex’s request to meet up. I giggled to myself at my responses, though, grinning at the bitchy part of me that I had trouble controlling whenever we were together.

“What are you going to do?” Callie asked, wheeling over the trolley to take the fresh desserts to the counters out front. “It’s been a couple of days, and you haven’t heard anything else.”

“I don’t expect to,” I replied, then pocketed my phone in my chef’s coat.

“Then why do you keep looking at your phone?”

Good question. I’d read and re-read our conversation more times than necessary, and I didn’t know why I still had the strong urge to get my phone out and look them over again.

“I guess I’m still in shock,” I replied, then began loading the red velvet cupcakes onto the top tray.

“Yeah, it was a little out there that he showed up at four in the morning.”

It was, and the fact that he’d driven two hours to talk to me had my head spinning. That wasn’t Alex at all. Well, not the one that I remembered. The Alex I knew would make a face, tell me I had my facts wrong—without actually telling me what facts he was talking about—and then walk away without another word, leaving me wondering what the hell had happened.

“What do you think he wants to say?” I asked, sliding my hand into my pocket.

“Nu-uh, you’re not doing that,” Callie said, shaking her head and reaching for me. “Don’t you look at that again. From what you told me, he knows he’s gotten into your head and is probably congratulating himself about it. He’s not getting that satisfaction, Ash.” She took my phone from me and put it in her pocket. “You’ve agreed to hear him out, and that’s it.” Her mouth twitched and her eyes sparkled with mischief. “And in public means that you won’t give in and screw his brains out.” She snorted, then full-on laughed.

“Cal!”

“Sorry,” she said, her voice shaking as she tried to stop. “But we both know that the second you see him, you’ll be thinking about it.”

I opened and closed my mouth like a fish out of water, the rebuttal not coming because I had nothing to say against what she said.

It was the truth. I hadn’t stopped thinking about it, and when Alex had shown up, all I could think about was how he touched me, his strong arms holding me up while he drove into me, his mouth while he licked and sucked between my legs, the way he whispered my name as though it hurt him to say. My body hummed as he drew near, sparks erupting when he touched my hand. I refused to react, to show him that a single touch from him made me weak.

“And that’s exactly why I can’t let it happen again.” No matter how much I wanted it.

I pulled up into the parking lot of the place my dad had watched Alex clean graffiti from the wall.
